Great Falls -- http://www.ci.great-falls.mt.us/

- King room - David - Conf #330321
- King room - Steve & Cindi - Conf #330323
- 2 Queen beds - Mom and Papa - Conf #330324
- 2 Queen beds - Mark and kids - Conf #330325
All rooms are $75.65 for the first night and $67.15 for the second and third nights (AAA rates).
* Pets okay
* Does not include breakfast
Three Forks -- http://threeforksmontana.com/
I called the Sacagawea Hotel at: http://www.sacajaweahotel.com/
I got us 5 rooms for August 31st and September 1st.
- 2 room upstairs (no dogs) 1 queen bed (8/27 Mark cancelled one upstairs room)
- 1 room upstairs (no dogs) 2 queen beds
- 2 rooms downstairs (dogs OK) 1 queen bed (8/24, I cancelled the first night of one of these rooms, since we'll arrive the next day)
The rooms were $107/night with the AAA discount (normally $119). This includes breakfast (as I assume the other B&B's do!).
Conf # 868203112 (Confirmed 5/21/04)
Salmon -- http://www.cityofsalmon.com/
Salmon is one of the nicest rural communities in Idaho (I dream about retiring there), and it's just 20 miles north of Tendoy. I had no idea where Tendoy was -- turns out it's in an absolutely beautiful area! The only downside is that it's a bit of a long drive from Great Falls (~300 miles).
By the way, near Salmon, there is the Sacajawea Interpretive Center (a state park) that in September is open only Tuesdays thru Saturdays. We should try to make it fit in...
I called Salmon to make reservations at: http://www.greyhouseinn.com/
We got 5 rooms for the night of the 2nd, but only 4 for the night of the 3rd... I figured we could make do...
The rooms are:
- Tower (king/twin) (2nd only) $80
- Green (full/full) $80
- Attic (queen) $70
- Garden (queen) $80
- Carriage House (queen/full) $105
The carriage house is a separate building where we might like to hang out... I figure between sleeping bags, cots, etc., we can make do on the 3rd... TC, Isobel, and I might even camp that night... :-) I will check down the road to see if the other room becomes available.
(Confirmed 5/21/04)
Missoula -- http://www.ci.missoula.mt.us/
Labor day is September 6th, so we figured that would be a good time to have reservations. We also figured Missoula, MT, was about half way between Great Falls (where we start) and Lewiston (where we end), and it is a fun town to even take day trips to other L&C destinations from, so Isobel found a cute B&B right in downtown Missoula which looks perfect! It is at: http://www.goldsmithsinn.com
I reserved the following rooms for the nights of September 4th, and 5th:
- Craighead $114 (Steve and Cindi?)
- Meadowlark $114 (Rich and Isobel?)
- Greenough $144 (big room -- Mom and Papa?)
- Bear Grass $134 (two rooms -- Mark, Dave, and kids?)
I figured that should be enough for all of us... It was basically the same cost as Holiday Inn, downtown, and is within easy walking distance of everything (6 blocks). And this way we have a beautiful common area to share (there are seven rooms total, of which we have four).
(Note, I canceled the reservation for the night of the 3rd, while confirming the reservations for the nights of the 4th and 5th on 5/21/04.)
Wallace -- http://wallace-id.com/
BTW, a highly recommended side trip from Missoula would be to Wallace (http://www.wallace-id.com/, 117 miles) to see the Silver Valley (http://silver-valley.com/) and tour an old mine (http://www.inidaho.com/Scripts/Official.asp?ID=4820&Display=No). The 1997 movie 'Dante's Peak (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0118928/) was filmed in Wallace; Cindi and I arrived for a vacation the day after shooting was finished, and before any of the sets were torn down. The town really looked like it had been through a volcanic disaster!
Lolo Hot Springs -- http://www.lolohotsprings.net/
Orofino -- http://www.orofino-id.com/
At: http://www.konkolvillemotel.com/
I got 5 rooms, #141, #143, #146, #147, and #148 for September 6th and 7th.
Most have two queen beds (at no charge -- they didn't have the single queen beds available). Room rate is ~$52/night.
And a dog is welcome! :-)
(Confirmed 5/21/04)
Lewiston -- http://www.lewiston.com/
Lewiston, ID - Sep 8 & 9
Comfort Inn Lewiston: 1-208-798-8090 http://snipurl.com/6684
- King room - Rich & Isobel - Conf #156913 (8/24, I cancelled just this room, since we'll leave that night -- Conf #108727)
- King room - Steve & Cindi - Conf #156914
- 2 Queen beds - Mom and Papa - Conf #156910
- 2 Queen beds - Mark and kids - Conf #156911
- 2 Queen beds - Dave - Conf #156912
The king rooms are $74.99 a night and the queen rooms are $69.99 (AAA rates).
* Pets okay
* Full breakfast included
* Free newspaperLewiston / Clarkston would be good (Mom spent a week or so there when I had my motorcycle wreck), and it's only 2 hours from the airport in Spokane. I suspect it will also have a lot of Lewis and Clark exhibits, given the name of the town and the fact it's one of the biggest population centers on the trail in the area. From there, we could explore as far West as Hermiston and Pendleton (3 hours) in a day trip. Pendleton has a neat underground city (http://www.pendletonundergroundtours.com/main/) that I've never been to.
Rich will bring the following:
A map of the trail which can be customized to show campsites (have asked for
coordinates in formats I can read):

GPS Waypoints of historical attractions along the trail, and a route for Delorme
Street Atlas (but not MS Streets & Trips):

OK, here's the scoop on Traveler's Rest:
According to
http://www.matr.net/print-9599.html, it's one of two places where
"historians, geologists and archaeologists have been able to document
the exact location of a campsite used by the famous expedition by finding
physical evidence of their stay". The other, Pompey's Pillar, is near
Billings.
The campsite is now the location of a state park (http://visitmt.com/categories/MoreInfo.asp?IDRRecordID=12373&SiteID=32), and it's right on our route, just outside of Missoula, MT, so we should make a point of stopping there.
A ton of other websites have a ton of tourist info:
Idaho:
http://lewisandclarkidaho.org/
Montana:
http://lewisandclark.state.mt.us/
Entire Trail:

The following books are also great resources:
Traveling the Lewis and Clark Trail (Julie Fanselow): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0762725893/103-6058879-6208609
National Geographic Guide to the Lewis & Clark Trail (Thomas Schmidt):

Along the Trail with Lewis and Clark (Barbara Fifer):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1560371889/103-6058879-6208609
The latter is my favorite so far -- it has the best maps and recommendations
of things to do -- but all appear to be quite good in their own way.

This one looks interesting:
Here are some maps of the route; we're following the red dots from Great Falls in the middle of region 6 to Spokane on the East end of Region 8:
Weather info for Great Falls and MT can be found at:
Bottom line is for September, the average max is 70 degrees and the average minimum is 43. Expect 2 days above 90 and 4 below 32. I think we'll be OK, but if somebody has concerns for how late we are, let me know!
Dave reserved a Subaru Outback (seats 5) from Hertz for 8/28 to 9/10.
I figure we'll have a car and Steve will have a car... Steve checked the cost of open-jaw vs. round trip reservations on Orbitz, and here's what he found:
So it's well worth the 6-hour drive to fly round-trip out of Spokane, and I suspect the connections are better as well.
Are we taking Lemhi Pass Rd to Tendoy? Actually it's called the 'Lewis and Clark Highway' West of the Idaho border. It keeps us as close to the original trail as possible (probably the reason for the name). I have no idea how good the road is, so I'd suggest we all use SUVs. Dave, you can rent a Ford Escape pretty reasonably through Hertz if you look for their specials and use a AAA discount. Let me know the best rate you find and I'll see if I can beat it using my Hertz Gold membership.
Please note these driving distances are from Mapblast, not necessarily following the route.
